The Project
The Ascension Island is an isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, around 1,600km from the coast of Africa and 2,250km from the coast of Brazil. The airport on Ascension serves as a refuelling point to planes crossing the Atlantic. Since reopening in 1982, the runway and shoulders at the airport had deteriorated. Toppesfield was chosen to carry out necessary planing and relaying works.
Our Work
- Toppesfield provided plant and labour for planing, surfacing and bond coat application
- Equipment: two 1m planers, two pavers, one Streetmaster, two HD90 rollers, one HD13 roller, one PTR, containers with spare parts and works vehicles.
- Logistical challenges around delivery of plant to the island were overcome by using a boat.
- Equipment was craned onto a barge and transported to the island. A 19-tonne weight restriction applied and was adhered to by Toppesfield
- Robust contingency plans were put in place by the company for the event of a breakdown, due to the length of time it would take to receive spare parts.
Results & Achievements
- Delivered Safely
- Defect free
- During their stay, the Toppesfield workforce carried out additional works to the remote island, including painting a local chapel and landscaping a village area.
- No breakdowns
- Completed to programme
