ToppBase
SUSTAINABLE PAVEMENT SOLUTIONS
Project:
Green Man Road, Navenby, Lincolnshire
Client:
Balfour Beatty Living Places
Sector:
Highways
Completion:
2021
The Project
Green Man Road was a narrow rural carriageway linking two strategic A Roads to the south of Lincoln. To improve traffic flow and safety for road users Lincolnshire County Council undertook the widening and upgrade of the road through its Highways Works Term Service Contract.
The scheme aimed to work towards a more sustainable delivery model utilising Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) procured from previous schemes in Lincolnshire, with the added benefit of reducing the carbon footprint of the project. Additional benefits were realised through the use of tar bound RAP which otherwise would have potentially been removed to landfill. With early contractor involvement, Toppesfield were able to work in collaboration with Balfour Beatty and Lincolnshire County Council to offer ToppBase, our highly sustainable and high performing pavement solution.
Our Work
Toppesfield undertook both the civil engineering and surfacing on the scheme, laying over 9,000 tonnes of material over a three-week period. Toppesfield’s self-delivery model meant that a full suite of our own plant was used in the delivery of the scheme, this included the SPF-8 Road Widener. Toppesfield are the first in the UK to operate this machine which has the capability to lay material in narrow widenings down to 0.3m and out to 2.5m either side of its central hopper. The use of this specialist item of plant replaces the need for hand lay work, increasing the finish quality of the pavement and significantly improving outputs to reduce the construction period and overall programme duration.
Offering a sustainable pavement solution, the project saw over 6,250 tonnes of Toppesfield’s ToppBase Cold Recycled Bound Material (CRBM) laid. Made from recycled aggregate, the use of ToppBase offers both a carbon saving and significantly reduces the amount of virgin material when compared to conventional asphalt. Additional benefits were realised by locating the ToppBase manufacturing plant in close proximity to the site. This reduced lorry movements when compared to conventional materials being supplied from out of the county.
