M23 Smart Motorway Compound
Client:

Sector:
Highways
Completion:
2019
The Project
To provide offices, welfare, and storage areas as part of the £164m smart motorway project on the M23, Toppesfield carried out surfacing works to a strategic compound situated close to the works.
Our Work
Utilising 3,200 tonnes of recycled road planings from the Highways England network, we provided our Cl948 Cold Recycled ToppBase from our mobile batching plant. Conventional compounds utilise AC 20 Dense Binder as a running surface. However, savings made through recycling allowed 1,000 tonnes of AC 10 Close surface course to be laid. Similarly, to what is expected from a traditional car park construction, this resulted in improved aesthetics and performance, and the removal of the traditional issues from using binder course as a finished surface, such as fretting due to larger aggregate. We completed the works by undertaking the lining.
Results & Achievements
- Recycled 3,200 tonnes of road planings from strategic road network
- Mobile batching plant reduce road movement and managed risk of programme delays from potential traffic issues when delivering to site
- Material mixed under Cl948 with zero non conformances
- Zero Defects
