Project:
RAF Odiham Runway Resurfacing
Client:
Amey
Sector:
Defence
Completion:
2021
The Project
Opened in 1937, RAF Odiham in Hampshire is a front-line support helicopter base. Home of the UK Chinook Force, RAF Odiham provides critical support for the UK military operations throughout the world. The base’s runway required upgrading, replacing the lighting with modern, more energy efficient lights and resurfacing approximately 1,540 m2 of the runway. This should extend its life span in excess of 15 years.
Our Work
The project saw Toppesfield plane and relay over 8,500 tonnes of material to the operational runway. Delivering the works over three visits, Toppesfield first planed and resurfaced a 310m2 section of the runway, leaving the remainder of the runway free for operational use. Once complete this section was handed back to RAF Odiham for use whilst works to the remaining 1,230m2 were undertaken.
Working in alliance with FM Conway and supply chain partners, planings were taken from site to be recycled, saving over 2,635 tonnes of material being sent to landfill.
To increase asset resilience and extend the runways life span in excess of 15 years, Toppesfield used FM Conway’s SurePol HD as the Porous Friction Course, giving improved resistance to deformation as well as increased toughness and flexibility.
Results & Achievements
- Increased asset resilience and extend runway’s life span in excess of 15 years.
- Worked with client to ensure a fully operational runway throughout project delivery
- Over 2,500 tonnes of material saved from going to landfill.
